Color of Milk in India
In India, milk packet colors are commonly used by dairy companies to indicate the type of milk and its fat content. While there is no strict nationwide legal mandate enforcing one exact color code for all brands, many dairies follow similar industry conventions to help consumers identify milk categories quickly.
Common color usage includes:
- Blue – Toned milk
- Green – Standardized milk
- Orange or Red – Full cream milk
- Magenta/Pink – Double toned milk
- Yellow – Cow milk in some brands
These colors are primarily an industry practice rather than a compulsory government rule. Different dairies may use slight variations, but the color patterns are widely recognized across India.
The system helps consumers identify milk types without reading detailed labels every day. Since milk is frequently purchased and often delivered early in the morning, color recognition allows faster selection.
Milk categories themselves are defined by fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) percentages under Indian food regulations administered by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
However, the packaging color associated with those categories is mostly a long-standing market convention adopted by dairy cooperatives and private brands.
Because of decades of consistent use, many consumers now associate packet color directly with milk richness and fat content regardless of brand.
