Heat Management and Basic Amenities

Not having an air-conditioner when you’re already feeling overheated is tough, but you can absolutely cool your core temperature down quickly using a few simple, strategic tricks.

Here is what you can do right now:

1. Target Your Pulse Points (The Fastest Way)

Apply a cold, damp cloth or wrap an ice cube in a towel and place it directly on your wrists, back of the neck, temples, or the inside of your elbows. The blood vessels in these areas are closest to the skin, and cooling them helps lower your overall body temperature much faster.

2. Hack Your Fan

If you have a ceiling fan or a table fan, it might just be moving hot air around. Try these adjustments:

  • The Ice Bucket Trick: Place a shallow bowl or bucket filled with ice or ice water directly in front of a table fan. The air will pick up the cold mist as the ice melts, creating a DIY cooling breeze.
  • Check Fan Direction: If you have a ceiling fan, make sure it is running counterclockwise (at medium or high speed). This pushes a cool breeze straight down.

3. Take a Lukewarm Shower

Avoid a freezing cold shower, as tempting as it sounds. Shocking your body with icy water can actually cause it to constrict blood vessels and trap heat inside. Instead, take a lukewarm or slightly cool shower. When you get out, let yourself air-dry a bit under the fan—the evaporation will cool your skin instantly.

4. Hydrate Strategically

Drink a tall glass of cool water. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, as they can contribute to dehydration, especially if you are sweating or recovering from an illness or exhaustion.

5. Keep the Air Moving

  • Open windows strategically: If there is a breeze outside, open windows on opposite sides of the room to create a cross-breeze.
  • Block the sun: Keep curtains or blinds closed on any windows facing the sun to prevent the room from turning into a greenhouse.

Give that pulse-point trick a shot first for some immediate relief. If the sweating or heat feels completely overwhelming despite trying to cool down, please immediately check in with a doctor.
